That's it.

Journal Entry: Thu Mar 14, 2013, 6:49 AM
Seriously... In my latest deviations I've improved by ALOT... I've been making an effort to make and write my own original stuff, original OCs, original machines, fix proportions... And yet, the better I get, the less favs/comments I have...

I'm seriously getting tired of this system, what's the point of improving if you are loosing popularity ? What's the point of having artists who draw poorly MS paint shits with 65 000 watchers, and amazing artists who have... 2 WATCHERS ?! Are people's IQ too low to recognize good art ? Do they really pay attention to what they fav ? Or their mind is limited to "OLOLOL ITZZ FUNNEEH I FAAEV" ? I'd prefer it to be the first possibility...

So... If we sum up, there's 3 MAJOR reasons to that :

1 : Everyone hate me (LOL, paranoid power, but I doubt it since I'm not alone in this case.)

2 : People are too dumb to appreciate GREAT art and don't want to overheat their neurons by reading fanfictions/understanding ADVANCED pictures (This one is possible though)

3 : ... IT'S COMPLETELY RANDOM (I doubt it).

Sorry, I'm not use to make these kind of journals but that really begins to piss me off.

And, just because a demonstration is worth it ...

aragorn by talaziom => Amazing Aragorn portrait.

Try to guess the amount of favs... No ideas ?

3. 3 FAVS FOR A 25 HOURS PORTRAIT. And the artist has... 3 watchers !

Finn by makra111 => 15 minutes FINN THE HUMAN drawing...

261 favs.

So I need to say more ?

Fuck popularity.

 Pretty much what's happened to me. As I started improving and moving away from just drawing animals all the time (which bored the hell out of me) I noticed a faves/comment drop.

I don't really care much anymore. Of course I love my watchers and stuff but being DA famous isn't going to get me into my animation course in college. I mainly just draw to entertain and show my friends because I'd rather have a small support group that backs me up 100% than a large group that only supports me when I draw the things they want to see. My most favourited things are stuff that's related to fandoms and crap which I probably haven't spent that much time on.

I've basically learned to do a huge 'nope' and stop trying to please people. Popularity on DA doesn't get many people far in life.

Just do what make you happy C:

Thanks for the comment, it's true.

Problem is that, unlike you, I don't draw for a job, I draw purely for fun :D, as a hobby

Want a foolproof way to become popular? Find a fandom notorious for its idiotic fanbase (My Little Pony and Sonic the Hedgehog immediately come to mind) and start shitting out "art". Put no effort into it whatsoever, just make sure it's properly tagged, which will make it easy for the brainless sheep to find. Next thing you know, you have so many watchers and ass-kissing fans you don't know what to do with them. It works!

1 : I'm watching the artist who drew this picture and I told her how good her art is on her prfile.

2 : That's not alot, there's talentless people getting 35 000 views in 6 onths

3 : I bought this premium MYSELF, nobody gave it to me. This bug is dues by the fact that I was previously given a 3 months PM , and I extended it for 1 year right after, BEFORE the 3 months PM expired.

4 : Provocative pictures ? You haven't browsed DA enough to understand what provocatives picture are.

1. I've noticed. Don't people come to your profile and say things like that, too, even if they don't fave or comment?

2. Agreed, seen it myself. ...actually have a username in mind in particular which shall not be said. However, the best plan of action is to look at the difference between them and you and see why people like their art so much more. With this particular person I have in mind, they write TERRIBLY but they post much more often. As much as I hate to say it, people who put quantity over quality here have more popularity.

3. Ah, okay. I don't know how that works.

4. I was trying to find the right word to say- I mean offensive. You draw girls with nipples poking out of their shirts and expect people to fave it. Girls wear bras, most don't go flaunting around their junk in public. Girls on deviantART recognize this and dislike the photos, therefore not faving them.

5. Hm?

Another thing : Why do you keep focusing on my women drawing ? I've been talking about my WHOLE ARTWORK, including my cartoon drawings, fanfictions, robots...

None of them got favs.

And, talking about that, my latest drawing for more favs than most of my latest deviations.

The first thing I saw when I clicked on your gallery was BOOBS, BOOBS EVERYWHERE. It was my first impression of you since it was the first thing I saw.
Well, maybe it'll help you to see it from a random person's point of view. I did not click on your other things because they are from fandoms I don't know (this is the main reason), the writing has grammatical errors, and I honestly usually don't read writing on here. I have fanfiction.net and ArchiveOfOurOwn to go to if I want to read. Why should I waste my time on deviantART reading about someone's characters which I do not know when I could go to another website and read about my favorite characters?

Congrats then! I think that's a good thing for you.

1 : Yes, and this isn't the problem ... ?

2 : I agree. I won't talk shit, some artists deserve to be popular, but some really don't.

3 : It's fine.

4 : Tits poking out of their shirts ? ... Well... In all honesty I didn't really pay attention about that, but I'll maybe get rid if it, I didn't know such a little detail would be such a major problem.

2. *nods* Yes. Well said.

4. Good! *screams* MALES ACTUALLY LISTEN, WOW.
I tried explaining this to my friend and literally all he said was, "Well, the girls in my stories don't wear bras! And, when the boys trip, they fall head-first into their boobs! HAHAHAHAHA!" and I wanted to slap him on the spot.
You have given me hope for male humans.

Sexy stuff really is awesome, you know. Not only is it just... well... sexy, but drawing it is the ultimate challenge since it's all about the anatomy. My friend RebeccaSaysYay is always messaging me like "DUDE I JUST DREW THE BEST PORN THE OTHER DAY." It's actually pretty funny.

Wow, it's almost like the entire history of art has shown that those that gain actual popularity either get it by luck or are only appreciated after they're dead. Welcome to the over-saturation problem of the internet, where thousands upon thousands of artists all compete for the attention of a bunch of yahoos online looking for whatever random fan art they can find to satiate their meagre attention spans.

Sorry man, but unless you're a genius of your trade or bring true inspiration to the masses with your art, you're just another one among thousands chomping at the bit in the hopes that you get randomly picked by someone whose influential enough to give you the attention you desire.

In all honesty, it often has to do with the fandom you're in.

People usually don't fave art of OCs unless the art is EXTREMELY good or they already watch you or are obsessed with your OCs. I mean, think about it here: Why would you fave a random picture of characters you don't know? The only OCs I really fave pictures of include my friend's OCs and TheGweny's. I fave TheGweny's because she's actually an incredible artist, and I first heard of her through a common fandom- Hetalia. Plus she posts pretty often.

Maybe that should shed at least a bit of explanation.

The same thing that is happening to you is happening to me, though. I've been getting better, but there still aren't nearly as many faves. I think it's because I don't post often enough, though.

This happens with every fandom, not only with the oldest ones...

"Why would you fave a random picture of characters you don't know" This sentence shows pretty well people's wrong mentality. Why would you have something that is a ripoff of an existing character ? Where's the originality ? So it's all about artists copying others ? Funny.

Huh? I never said anything about old fandoms. Usually people in popular fandoms get more pageviews. If you take two people with the same writing abilities, but one writes Hetalia fanfiction and one write... um... Magic Tree House fanfiction, obviously the Hetalia fanfiction is going to get more popularity.

I never said anything about copying others! In fact, it really pisses me off when people say that all OCs are rip-offs. Please do not put words in my mouth.

I'm saying that people don't pay attention to OCs. Put yourself in this position: you're looking at the newest deviations on deviantART, all just in, just posted by creative artists all around the world. Now, let's say your thumbnails are not working and you can only read the titles of deviations.
You find a picture titled, "My OC."
Then, you see another picture. It's titled, "Sarah Bellum- sorry it only took five minutes."
Which would you click, an OC most likely created by a twelve-year-old girl with no variety or character flaws, or a character from a television show you know and love?
In case you're going to say "but they can see the thumbnails," they're usually difficult to see. I have to squint like an old lady to see them.

Now, from that poinf of view... I see what you mean, but if we look at it objectively, this is really unfair, since making an OC is harder than copying a character from a TV show. That's what I meant when I said "artists copying others".

That's what I'm complaining about, people actually pay more attention to the FANDOM rather than to the actual artwork

Making an OC is possibly one of the hardest things to do! Even though there are people all around us to use as examples, we still can't make our OCs totally human. As someone who hopes to eventually publish a book one day, I know that feel, bro.
It's actually pretty hard to write fanfiction, though. You've said you write fanfiction, so you probably know how difficult it is. Since you didn't actually make the character yourself, you have to look up PAGES UPON PAGES of info about the character, amiright? I'm actually in the midst of writing a Durarara!! fanfiction about one of the character's pasts, and I didn't realize he already had a past. I looked him up, and my story is getting better.
See? It's difficult.

Well, it's all about what the fans like. I love my fandoms. I am attached to my fandoms. If I had to choose between playing Harvest Moon games or viewing Harvest Moon fanart, I'd choose the games.

Well, my fanfictions feature many original characters, but I admit, for Canon ones, I've to pay attention to respect their behavior, and to make sure that the story makes sense, and that their behavior fits their personnality.

It's indeed difficult

80% of my gallery is MS Paint. Are you insisting I have no skills, and that my art 'sucks' and has poor quality? Also, just letting you know, the example you gave isn't even Microsoft Paint. It looks more like it was done with Sai or a similar program that uses Vector graphics. It's too smooth, not pixeled enough to be paint.

Did I say that the example I gave is MS PAINT ? No.

I said ms paint shit as a generic term for things like THAT : [link]

And still, this drawing is better than most of the thing I saw.

That doesn't mean there's no shitty artwork done with SAI/GImp.

Stop putting words in my mouth.

And, that may butthurt you, but yes, MS paint has poorer quality, that is all, this is a fact.

Most of MS PAINT art, even if there's exceptions, IS bad art.

And yes, this program is bad compared to more advanced programs like GIMP/Photoshop/SAI

It's only bad if you dont know how to use the program correctly. Just like some people do bad art with photoshop, some people do bad art with paint but not most. Most paint art is amazing.
